Union Members Outside of Local 627 Headquarters, 1930
J. E. Milles Studio; MMF Photo Collection, #157

The Mutual Musicians Local #627 of Kansas City, Missouri, was established in 1917, providing essential services and support for African American jazz musicians. In 1930, under the leadership of William Shaw, the union purchased the brick duplex at 1823 Highland Avenue. It was converted into a dance hall and clubhouse. The union dedicated its new headquarters during National Music Week, Sunday, May 4. The next day the union held a battle of the bands at Paseo Hall which lasted until daybreak. This started a "battle of the bands" tradition in the ensuing years to celebrate National Music Week. In the photo, union members are lined up outside Local 627 headquarters at 1823 Highland Ave, Kansas City, MO on May 4, 1930.
