The McCook Post No. 34 G.A.R. Civil War Memorial was erected for fellow Civil War soldiers in 1910 by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) at the GAR Post Number 34 in Lamar, MO. The post was named after Union General Alexander McDowell McCook. A real cannon from the Gunboat Benton, which sailed the Mississippi River, was used during the Civil War and was placed next to the Barton County Courthouse in the downtown square. The memorial was rededicated in 1985 to all American soldiers involved in every war.
