Sweet Springs Historical Highlight Tour

Sweet Springs Historical Society

The city of Sweet Springs was originally established in 1838 as Brownsville, Missouri, but changed its name to Sweet Springs in 1887. The community was known for its natural springs and it became a destination location due to the 'sweet springs' and the health resort that was established in 1881. Many towns in central Missouri were popular for the outdoor and health benefits of the springs, including numerous in Saline County and the surrounding counties, like Pertle Springs near Warresnburg in Johnson County. With a combination of the springs, the railroad, and the shopping region, Sweet Springs was a bustling town.
