Americans were encouraged to exercise their love of freedom and democracy during the Cold War, which resulted in many new monuments being erected across the country. One such memorial that was heavily replicated was the Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty, also known as Lady Liberty, is one of the most iconic American landmarks of all time. Given to the country as a gift from France in 1886, the copper sculpture stands proudly on Liberty Island in New York City.

Lamar, Missouri was one of many towns to erect a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Located in the downtown square, just to the side of the Barton County Courthouse, stands Lamar’s Lady Liberty. The plaque on its base says the monument was funded by the ‘schoolchildren of Barton County,’ however, this could have been associated with the Boy Scouts, as the children’s organization funded many Lady Liberty replicas across the nation in the 50s. Whatever the case, the memorial serves as a symbol of freedom, and shows the patriotism expressed by American small-towns during the Cold War.
